Shana is an original character created for Legendary Guardian. She has no basis in cannon and also appears in Bonds of Love and Braska's Journey. As housekeeper to three generations of Auron's family, Shana plays an important role. Hired into the service of Auron's grandfather, Tamon, at the age of twenty, she was already a widow. Tamon hired her to assist his wife, Yoshi, in the daily running of the household after she became pregnant. In the end, the birth of twins proved to be too much for the woman and she died in childbirth leaving Tamon to raise his new son and daughter on his own. Shana became both mother and housekeeper to the pair. The depth of her relationship with Tamon is never explored. The twins, Youke and Youri, think of Shana as a mother. When Youke becomes a Warrior Monk and Youri leaves home as wife to Aurik, the housekeeper continues to live in the family home. Later, when Youri returns with Auron, she becomes a grandmother figure and permanent fixture in Auron's life. Shana's influence in Auron's development as a person cannot be understated. Though she is 50 when Auron comes to live in Bevelle, her personality and guidance help to shape the man he will become. He loves her dearly and would do anything for her. Through most of the stories, Shana is described with gray hair – though the original color was dishwater blond. Her eyes are watery blue in her older years, but sill retain the happiness and mischief of her younger days. A plump woman, she is every bit the picture of someone's loving grandmother and is constantly wearing a cooking smock. Her personality is friendly and vibrant despite her years and she is always ready to help those in need. I'll have to go through my pictures and find the right one to scan for this description, but I literally had my own grandmother in mind when I created Shana. The delicate round face, happy eyes, and seemingly never ending presence in the kitchen are all her traits. I don't know how many times Mary Catherine baked cakes for days for the Women's Auxiliary at the local branch of the VFW, gathered clothing for the orphans at the Xenia Soldier's and Sailors home, or cooed happily over a baby in her arms. Children were truly her devotion and joy in life and I can only hope that these little qualities were infused in Shana to immortalize my Grandmother's sweet and tender nature. |
